Sony “Welcome Back” programme announced

SCEE revealled their hand with the welcome back offer and I’ll tell you what, I’m sold.

After being posted, disappearing and then re-appearing it appears that the Welcome Back programme has been confirmed. Once the Playstation Store re-opens PS3 users will get to pick two of:

  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Infamous
  • Wipeout HD/Fury
  • Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty
  • Dead Nation

PSP account owners will get a choice of two from the following:

  • LittleBigPlanet PSP
  • ModNation PSP
  • Pursuit Force
  • Killzone Liberation

A decent selection indeed and I’ll certainly be happy enough coming back to claim those. Certainly better than an indie title that no one would want. This is of course further improved by 30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non subscribers with a 60 day subscription for those already subscribed.

The latter is also fairly clever. I was under the impression that the reception for PlayStation Plus was hardly overwhelming so giving people effectively a trial could suck them in, boosting subscriptions and income long term. Maybe I’m too cynical, but it is still win-win. We get to try out PlayStation Plus, Sony have a chance to promote subscriptions and also promote themselves.

For anyone currently sitting on the fence about coming back, I imagine that this could pull them back in. I am sure many people will turn their back on Sony, at least for now, but this is a good step to recovery… so long as it doesn’t happen again!
